Attorney Decoding Legal Aspects Of The Viral Justifiable Self-Defense Video

In a recent viral TikTok video, a woman is aggressively trying to knock food out of a man’s hand. This case has drawn attention to a legal issue connected with justifiable self-defense, since Attorney Ugo Lord made comments on this matter.

In the face of her attempts, though, the man succeeds in keeping his food out of her reach. And the video ends with a man throwing food in the woman’s face and she falls down.

Lawyer’s Reaction

Ugo Lord, known for his legal insights on social media, begins by asking his followers: “Look at this and let me know if he committed any crimes?”

Furthermore, he claims that the man used reasonable force since he feared bodily injury, and the force he used was proportional to the threat.

According to the Legal Information Institute, justifiable self-defense is a legal principle that allows the use of force to protect oneself from an attempted injury. To successfully claim self-defense, the defendant must prove four elements:

  • They were confronted with an unprovoked attack.
  • The threat of injury or death was imminent.
  • The degree of force used in self-defense was objectively reasonable under the circumstances.
  • They had an objectively reasonable fear that they were going to have an injury unless they used self-defense.

In the context of this video, the man could argue that the woman confronted him with an unprovoked attack when the woman attempted to knock the food out of his hand. The danger, which was not a life-threatening one, came in the form of injury. This force—throwing food to the woman—may appear objectively reasonable under given circumstances, especially since no more aggressive forms were used. Finally, he might claim that there was a real threat to him physically unless he retaliated.

In addition, the man resorted to an equal amount of force as was used in the threat; this could make his actions appropriate.

Interest of Viewers

The viral reaction video of Dr. Lord has certainly piqued the interest of viewers, eliciting a wide range of comments. His video has attracted nearly 1 million views, with over 900 different comments.

“At least the food didn’t go to waste. It was used properly.” One viewer joked.

However, not all comments were in favor of the man’s actions.

“They’ll find a way to charge him anyway, even though she’s clearly the aggressor” Another argued.

Amidst the debate, a voice of reason emerged: “Well she wanted the food knocked out of his hand. She got what she wanted. Just not in the way she wanted 😂”

Conclusion

As the video has even sparked a lively debate on social media, it is important to keep in mind how the law should be construed and can differ from case to case.

The man’s behavior could possibly be seen as a legitimate form of self-defense. But this eventually would be a court’s decision. As always, it is vital to encourage respectful and nonviolent interactions both in the online world and in the real one.
