Hunter Biden was found guilty on three counts of felony gun charges. The jury determined he violated laws that prohibit drug addicts from owning firearms.
The conviction is the first to involve a president’s immediate family member being convicted of a crime while his father is in office. However, Hunter Biden’s crimes predate his father’s time in office. Hunter Biden is expected to appeal this felony conviction.
What Was Hunter Biden Convicted Of?
Hunter Biden was found guilty on three charges linked to a revolver he purchased at a Delaware gun shop in October 2018. He was convicted on two counts for lying about his drug use on a federal background check form. The third count was for using a gun while addicted to and using illegal drugs.
The President’s son’s testimony was based on his denial. He said he didn’t view himself as a user and an addict when he purchased the gun.
The jury deliberated for three hours before arriving at the verdict. Upon sentencing, Hunter Biden could face a 25-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $75,000. However, it is unlikely that he will face the maximum sentence as he is a first-time offender.
The sentencing usually takes place within 120 days of the guilty verdict. Consequently, Hunter Biden’s sentencing will likely take place before Election Day.
President Ruled Out a Pardon
Hunter Biden may have faced his first conviction, but his legal battles are far from over. He will also stand trial for federal tax offenses. Those proceedings are scheduled to begin in November. His current conviction could negatively affect the outcome of his November charges.
Both of Hunter Biden’s cases have been overseen by Special Council David Weiss, previously Trump’s appointed U.S. Delaware attorney. Weiss was vindicated by the guilty verdict. In the past, his team was forced to deny allegations that his legal activities were politically motivated.
Legal teams originally hoped to settle the case earlier this year. The negotiated agreement would have allowed Hunter Biden to clear the gun charges by pleading guilty to two tax misdemeanors. However, the judge would not approve the deal as the judge found some points of the arrangement suspect.
Although the president has the power to do so, he repeatedly stated that he would not pardon his son.
Emotional Legal Battle
The court case was emotional for Hunter Biden and his family. He repeatedly submitted heartfelt testimony about his struggles with alcohol and drug addiction. It emphasized a time in his life that he referred to as “a blur of complete and utter debauchery” and “nothing but drinking and drugging” in his book “Beautiful Things”.
Hunter Biden’s ex-partners were often called to the stand. Hallie Biden, widow of Hunter’s brother Beau Biden, recounted several occasions when the defendant’s use of crack cocaine put a strain on his marriage and relationship with his children.
Jill Biden came to the court often to support her stepson. She arrived shortly after the verdict was read. She reacted by staring ahead of her.
Reactions to Hunter Biden’s Convictions
Hunter Biden said he was “disappointed by the outcome” of the case, but grateful to have the support of his family.
President Biden also showed support for his son.
“I am the president, but I am also a dad. Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today. So many families who have had loved ones battle with addiction understand the feeling of pride in seeing someone you love come out the other side and be so strong and resilient in recovery.
“I will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal. Jill and I will always be there for Hunter and the rest of our family with our love and support. Nothing will ever change that.”
