Romanian authorities recently arrested famous rapper Wiz Khalifa during a performance at a music festival. The event, otherwise known as Beach Please!, featured artists such as Wiz Khalifa, Gucci Mane, Lil Pump, and Ice Spice.
Khalifa’s arrest took place on Saturday, July 13th. Footage shared from the rapper’s performance shows him smoking marijuana on stage at the event. Following Wiz Khalifa’s arrest, Romanian officials issued a press release confirming that they had charged an American with “illegal possession of high-risk drugs.”
A statement by the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism further described his arrest. The statement revealed that Khalifa possessed over 18 grams of cannabis and publicly smoked on stage during the event. After the show, authorities apprehended the rapper and charged him. Although he was later released, an ongoing investigation into the incident persists.
Khalifa has responded to the incident via social media posts on X. He said, “Last night’s show was amazing. I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage. They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big [explative] joint next time”.
Who is Wiz Khalifa?

Romanian Drug Policy
Unlike the U.S., Romania has stringent drug policies with little wiggle room for exceptions. Depending on the drug, people can face from 2-5 years in prison for even having traces found on their person. In less severe cases, people usually face fines of 200-20,000 RON ($45-$4,500).
Under strict government supervision in Romania, the growth, sale, import, and use of marijuana are allowed solely for medical purposes. Additionally, the country has been allowing the development of cannabis for medical research and other industrial purposes, such as hemp production. Implementation of medical use falls under intense government control.
According to a public travel guide webpage from the UK government, they warn their citizens that Romania has a zero-tolerance drug policy. They advise people to expect a prison sentence if charged with illegal possession. In recent years, the number of foreign citizens charged with unlawful drug possession in Romania has steadily increased. This rise is likely due to the popularity and decriminalization of marijuana in countries like the U.S. and Canada.
