Lifeguard Challenges: What Does It Take To Be A Lifeguard?

Every job has its risks, and being a lifeguard is no exception. It demands constant preparedness and vigilance to handle lifeguard challenges effectively. A viral video on social media highlights how lifeguards risk their lives to save others, prompting questions about whether lifeguards can legally pursue compensation if their lives are endangered.

When you see lifeguards in movies, you will think the job is full of roses. But when you become one or know someone who is, you will know that the job requires a lot of avoidance of lifeguard challenges.

Lifeguards are very important in pools, beaches, etc. They keep the place safe for swimmers and respond to drowning and other emergencies. They also hold the place in order. However, some people disobey the warnings of lifeguards, putting themselves and everyone else in danger.

Can Lifeguards Sue the Person They Saved Despite Lifeguard Challenges?

In the viral lifeguard challenges video, a man tells a lady not to enter the water because of the wave. The man shouts the woman’s name, Jessica, and calls on the lifeguards to save her. Two lifeguards come to the woman’s rescue.

But the wave was coming strong, so the lifeguards could not save Jessica or themselves. The question now is, can the lifeguards sue Jessica for endangering their lives?

According to the top celebrity lawyer, Ugo Lord, when you are in the profession of saving lives, you are considered a good Samaritan. And when you are a good Samaritan, you cannot be sued. Also, the good Samaritan cannot sue the person they are saving.

Courts in the United States ensure lifeguards are covered solely under the Workers Compensation Act in these situations to prevent them from gaining a financial advantage while helping. Therefore, lifeguards cannot sue Jessica even if their lives are endangered.

Challenges of Being a Lifeguard

As previously said, there is a lot of risk in this job. A recent study has shown that some lifeguards have PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) because of the life-threatening situations they face. So, if you intend to be a lifeguard, ensure you know the lifeguard challenges involved. Some of them include:

Exposure to Harmful Chemicals

Exposure to toxic chemicals, especially for a long time, can lead to many health issues. Chlorine is one of the chemicals used to maintain pools. Inhaling concentrated or improperly blended chemicals can cause skin irritation or serious problems. Chemicals can also harm your eyes if you come into contact with them.

Sunlight Burns

You can get sunburn or skin cancer from staying under the sun for a long time. You can also have heat stroke, and it can become deadly if you don’t treat it well.

Staying Vigilant

As a lifeguard, you must always keep a close eye on the swimming areas and water areas. This constant pressure to be vigilant can be exhausting mentally. Also, you have to make quick decisions in case somebody else dies, which can cause a lot of distress.

How to Overcome Lifeguard Challenges

To become an effective lifeguard, you must overcome challenges. You must also know how to manage stress, apply first aid, and follow self-care procedures.

Effective communication skills are crucial in overcoming lifeguard challenges, particularly when interacting with children. Some individuals may not follow the rules simply because they are unaware of the risks involved. It is your responsibility to communicate with them. Additionally, consistent daily training is essential. Avoid becoming complacent just because you have completed your training.

Conclusion

Lifeguarding involves lucrative yet challenging work, often stressful due to the high stakes of people’s lives in your care. It’s crucial to identify and understand the various risks involved. Approach the role seriously rather than just for enjoyment. Ensure you are well-prepared, as you will be held accountable if anything goes wrong during lifeguard duties.
