On a rather mundane Sunday afternoon, while most people were doing their usual business, a Fort Wayne road rage incident broke the street’s calmness, culminating in a violent confrontation.
The incident, which ended up with the police placing both suspects in custody, was caught on video by a dashcam.
Critical Details Of The Incident
The collision occurred around 12:05 p.m. on Maplecrest Road near the intersection of Lake Avenue, according to the Fort Wayne Police Department.
At the same time, an individual by the name of Laura Scatena recorded the footage of the accident with the use of her dashcam. Ms. Scatena was driving behind the cars involved.
The video confirmed the testimonies of witnesses and presented crucial evidence for the ongoing police investigation. Specifically, the video begins with a car cutting off a red van. Shortly after, the red van allegedly caused the car to almost crash before both vehicles stopped.
Alexander Mozee, who was the driver of the car, left his car and came up to the driver of the van – Jason Henkle, and shattered his driver’s window, according to police reports.
Gunfire and Consequences
In response to the physical assault, Henkle then pulled out a handgun and fired several rounds. The bullets hit the other fellow on the arm, where he also sustained non-critical injuries.
But the violence did not end there. A bullet also shattered the glass of a white SUV, injuring the occupants of that SUV. The SUV was driving by and had nothing to do with the incident. A few moments later, law enforcement officers arrived at the scene, responding to multiple reports about the road rage incident and subsequent shooting.
Ongoing Investigation and Legal Implications
The police cordoned off the area around Maplecrest Road for more than an hour while they gathered evidence and documented the incident scene.
As the investigation continued, both drivers, who sustained non-critical injuries, faced potential criminal charges.
Jason Henkle was arrested on charges of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. Additionally, the court charged Mozee with battery.
Henkle said that he fired three shots to defend himself and his wife since Mozee assaulted him, hitting him in the side of the head after shattering the window.
Another driver at the scene informed the police that he heard up to four shots. He was hit on his head by a large welt after bullets smashed through his passenger window, and one bullet lodged itself inside their car.
Mozee will appear in court. A few weeks after his initial arrest, the Allen Superior Court dropped Henkle’s charges.
This incident provides a clear and sober warning about maintaining composure behind the wheel. Ultimately, the investigation results could influence future discussions on traffic safety and cases related to road rage.
