Bomb Threats and Libs of TikTok: What Really Happened in Coralville?

How a Bomb Threat Shakes a Coralville Community?

In March, there was an incident where police investigated a bomb threat case against a junior high school with the help of trained dogs, and they tried to figure out why someone might want to attack the teachers and children. Police immediately concluded the threat was a hoax and wasn’t real. According to Hanna Dvorak’s investigation, this all started with Chaya Raichik’s post and her ‘Libs of TikTok’ account.

Libs of TikTok’s Controversial Posts

Before moving on to the controversial post, understanding the meaning of Libs of TikTok is likewise essential. A social media celebrity, Chaya Raichik, mocks people with the title “Libs of TikTok,” which means Liberals of TikTok. In the beginning, Raichik was not suspected of making bomb threats in Iowa or anywhere else. But about 15 hours before the danger at Northwest Junior High School in Coralville, She wrote that the school has a “pornographic” book that promotes gay sex in children, and teachers are teaching them. According to what she wrote on the social media site X, these are the books your children will read at school.

Law Enforcement Perspectives through Multiple Jurisdictions

This incident was not a new one that happened in Coralville. According to NBC News, police and government officials in four other cities – Burbank, California; Minnetonka, Minnesota; Oklahoma City; and Tualatin, Oregon think Raichik’s social media posts that make fun of people like drag performers, LGBTQ teachers, and doctors who treat transgender patients led to threats in those cities. Even though no one knows what directly led to the threats. However, through timing, it seems likely that the Libs of TikTok posts chose targets.

NBC News Identifies 33 Instances of Digital Harassments 

The fact that Chaya Raichik and the Libs of TikTok were behind all of this nasty stuff was further proved by an unmasking pattern of 33 instances of bomb threats or other violent intimidation. Starting in November 2020, NBC News found 33 cases where people or organizations that Libs of TikTok singled out later reported bomb threats or other forms of violent bullying. These threats were made against institutions in 16 states, the District of Columbia, Ontario, and Canada, including schools, libraries, hospitals, small companies, and elected officials. The threats arrived many days after tweets from Libs of TikTok. Investigations found that out of the 33 threats, 21 were bomb threats. Above all, these were usually made through email and targeted schools.

To investigate the scenario further, NBC News emailed Raichik on Monday, asking her thoughts on the threats. Instead of responding directly, she wrote on X that NBC News was working on a “hit piece,” which put her in a suspicious position. She denied her involvement in the case by saying, “They do it to hurt my reputation by making me look like an extremist. This ‘bomb threat’ story is getting old.”

FBI Involvement & Legal Actions

Luckily, this whole incident was handed over to FBI authorities. The situation was crucial as neighborhood and national resources were used to deal with the 33 threats. Additionally, at least 13 law enforcement agencies decided to get help from the FBI to find the people behind them.
According to the FBI, “the bureau and our state and local partners will keep working to vigorously investigate and hold accountable those who make these threats, whether real or not.” Putting innocent people in danger, wasting law enforcement’s scarce resources, and costing taxpayers money are all consequences of threat hoaxes. Interestingly, when asked directly about Raichik or the status of cases connected to the 33 threats, the FBI did not answer.
Of the 33 cases that NBC News looked into, only three had charges against them. Moreover, the charging papers did not have a single name, “Libs of TikTok” or Raichik. However, four cases were suspected due to their link with foreign origins because they used email addresses with non-U.S. domains. This shows how complicated it is to deal with threats that could have effects across borders.

Libs of TikTok are a Rising Force in Culture Wars

Because of what the Libs of TikTok did, the case of Konstantine Anthony shows very clearly how the platform’s material can affect real life. As a result, it can lead to culture wars. Konstantine Anthony is a City Council member in Burbank. He got violent emails within a few minutes after Libs of TikTok shared a video of him receiving a spank by a drag queen at a political event, and these Libs of TikTok wrote that it happened in front of children, which was a lie. Furthermore, his City Hall staff also got at least two bomb threats because of Libs of TikTok. He blamed Raichik for all of these things.

Libs of TikTok are now playing a bigger and bigger part in the culture wars across the country. Elon Musk, a fan, returned the account on X and regularly praised it. Different Politicians have also said nice things about it. But Raichik has been linked to several controversies, including bomb threats, raising serious concern about her personality in different groups.

Effects on the Community: Schools, Officials, and Mental Well-Being

Libs on TikTok cause damage in the real world due to its controversial posts. This pose has led to bomb threats at least 11 schools across the U.S. Superintendent Sue Rieke-Smith of Oregon’s Tigard-Tualatin School District. This cyberbullying has effects that go far beyond the internet. It has a real impact on schools, government leaders, and people’s mental health. Officials like Superintendent Sue Rieke-Smith encourage people to be punished when they break the rules of ethics on social media.
